Ｊ＝クック（キャプテン＝クック）の率いる探検隊が、オーストラリアでこの動物の名前を先住民に聞いたところ「カンガルー」と答えたため、以降、その名前で呼ばれるようになった。
「カンガルー」は現地語で「私は知らない」を意味し、Ｊ＝クック達がそれを動物の名前と誤解したことから命名されたという説が以前までは定説のように扱われていたが、誤解というのは俗説で、現地の言葉で「カンガルー類」を指す「gangurru」が語源。
元は「跳ぶもの」を意味する。
